Seneca Rocks is a well known area for rock climbers. When you are not on the mountain, you can see climbers on the rocks. It is always fun to watch them climb. The Rocks also offer a trail for hiking to the top. Around the backside of the mountain, there are many trails that the rock climbers use to get to the rocks. We hike these trails also to get to the top.
Trail
Name: Roy Gap Road to East Ridge Trail to Seneca Rocks Trail
Distance: 2.80 Miles
Elevation Gain: 696 Feet
Terrain: Very rocky and rooty on the ascent and smooth gravel on the decent
Weather: 72 degrees and sunny
Duration: 1:45:34
My all time favorite app is called AllTrails. I have the AllTrails pro version which allows download of maps for when there is no cellular service. They do have a basic version available. I highly recommend this app if you do a good amount of hiking.
Our Trail Stats
Prior to the hike, we took the kids to the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center. We didn’t know it at the time but the Discovery Center was having their 7th annual Nature Day. Nature Day consisted of a lot of educational booths set up throughout the inside and outside of the building. The kids were very excited to take part in this unexpected find.
The first booth they went to was the snake table. Ethan, Nick and Isabella all held a snake and the others go up close to them as well.
Holding a snake
One of the booths talked about recycled materials.
The next booth was an Owl interaction.
I didn’t end up taking a lot of pictures of the activities because we were all actively participating in them. The kids got to touch snails and interact with fish, see what is living and growing in the river, etc. They had a blast and everyone got goodie bags once they finished.
The Hike
We parked in the lower parking lot and began our hike on Roy Gap Road. The bridge across the river was washed out and we had scramble to get across it, “Parkour” as the kids would say.
As we continued up the road to the trail, we walked alongside a stream with small cascading waterfalls.
Stream
We made our way to the East Ridge Trail which is also one of the turns the rock climbers use to get to the bottom of the rocks.
We took the East Ridge Trail that leads up the backside of the mountain. This trail goes straight up, no switch backs and is very rocky and rough.
Ascent of the mountain
During our ascent, we came across a couple of critters.
Critters
Isabella found a really neat leaf.
We made it to the top of the rocks and as always it never disappoints.
We took the kids out to the overlook platform first.
Overlook Platform
We could also see our car from the overlook. I took a picture with and without zoom.
The car!
Blake and I took turns going out to the rocks with the kids. We didn’t want to climb them with Taylor.
Blake got some great shots of the rock climbers
The kids dabbled in some rock climbing of their own.
The kids took a break for just a few to grab a drink.
Snack Time
We got more pictures from the top of the rocks. The views are breathtaking!
Once we were done exploring the rocks, we began our descent down the Seneca Rocks Trail. The Seneca Rocks Trail features a series of switchbacks to get back down to the base of the mountain.
Descent
We passed some Rhododendron on the descent, which is always beautiful to see.
Rhododendron
Poor little Totsy just couldn’t hang and fell asleep.
Another cool thing along the descent is all of the informational signs. The kids were excited to stop and read them with us. It is so nice how much they love learning about nature and the places we hike.
The kids found another rock to climb before finishing the trail.
We crossed the South Fork of the North Branch of the Potomac River. (That’s a mouthful).
We made it to the end of the trail and the kids were excited to see what we were going to do next. We had a family take a picture of all of us. We love it when we get a full family picture.

Seneca Rocks is such an incredible rock formation within the mountains. I would recommend making the trip. It doesn’t matter what season, it is always beautiful.
As soon as the kids got home from school, we loaded up the car and headed for West Virginia. I wanted to book something near Seneca Rocks, WV but everything was already booked. However I did find a cabin at Smoke Hole Cabins about 15 mins away.
Once you get off the interstate headed towards Elkins, WV, there is not a lot of restaurants. We did find one called Old 33 Grill and figured it would have something for everyone. The restaurant was very busy and the service was okay. When we finished our meal and it was time to go, we waited for about 10 minutes and nobody came to bring us our check so we got up and went to the bar and we were able to pay. That would be our only complaint with the restaurant. The food was fantastic and large portion sizes.
Old 33 Grill
We got back on the road and finally made it to our cabin just before 10pm. The cabin and the surrounding area was beautiful and had such a peaceful feel to it. We unloaded the car and went to bed.
Smoke Hole has many different lodging to choose from. We got one of their cabins and I feel that it was almost brand new or newly remodeled. Everything about it seemed new and it was exceptionally clean. Our cabin had 2 bedrooms, both with queen size beds and a loft area with 2 twin beds and an area for sleeping bags or an air mattress. A decent kitchen and living room and a large front porch. Each cabin had a picnic table, fire ring and charcoal grill. The kitchen was fully stocked which is a nice bonus. We cooked most of our meals to save money.
Cabin
Right outside of our cabin was the entrance to the pool as well as a playground, fishing pond and 1 hole of mini golf. While I cooked breakfast the next morning the kids played on the mini golf hole and on the playground.
After we finished the cavern tour, we went to Seneca Rocks. We went up to the Discovery Center and found out they were having their discovery days. The kids got to participate in all sorts of activities and won all sorts of prizes and had such a great time. After the kids finished up, we went down to a picnic area to have sandwiches for lunch before hiking to the top of the rocks via the backside of the mountain (not the trail with switchbacks that goes up the frontside of the mountain).
Check out my post below on the Discovery center activities and Seneca Rocks hike.
Once we finished the hike, we wanted to reward the kids for the fantastic job they did during the hike and we went to Yokum’s store and got ice cream. Afterwards we took them to The Gendarme which is a rock climbing store.
During one of the times Blake and I went to Seneca, we found a large swimming hole with a rope swing and we wanted to take the kids to play before heading back to the cabin for the night.
To get to the swimming hole, it was a quick walk from the parking lot. We took some chairs and and set up a little area. It was a lot busier than we expected but it was okay. Blake and the kids swam across the river to the tree with the swim and began swinging into the water. The did this for about an hour. I sat with Taylor while they played, she was exhausted. Some of the kids came back and when they did, I swam to the tree and I jumped off the rope swing one time and I thought I was going to die haha. It was a lot of fun but FREEZING. The water was very cold.
The area around the swimming hole is beautiful.
We got back to the cabin and the kids wanted to play in the pool. We told them that was fine and we cooked while they swam. The had a blast in the pool.
While waiting for dinner to cook, Blake took Taylor around to different areas of the campground.
We had a great dinner with a beautiful sunset. We also roasted marshmallows for smores.
Once the kids went to bed, Blake and I walked over to swing by the creek and enjoyed some wine and chatted a bit. It was a fantastic evening.
The next day we got up and debated on going somewhere for breakfast or cooking something we had. We ended up cooking what he had. This saved us the hassle of having so much to bring home.
Once we finished breakfast, we packed up the cabin and loaded the car.
While we packed the kids went to town playing and exploring more of the campground. Once we finished we joined them and gave them some money to feed the fish and ducks.
River behind the cabin
After leaving the campground, we made our way up to Spruce Knob (West Virginia’s high point). The last time we took the kids here it was 17 degrees and snowing.
After leaving Spruce Knob we went to the Green Bank Observatory. We went here about 3 years ago but didn’t have time to do the tour. This time we had all the time we needed to do the tour and let the kids play in the science center.
Check out my post below of the Green Bank Observatory.
Once we left the Observatory and the National Radio Quiet Zone, we were able to get directions to High’s Restaurant. This is a restaurant a co-worker of mine recommended to me the last time we went to Green Bank. We liked it so much that we stopped again and just like before, it did not disappoint!
We then drove the little over 3 hours back home. We did get a little surprise on our way home. We were driving down the parkway and I spotted something black in the woods. We turned around and sure enough there was a Black Bear. One of the kids then said, “look, there is a baby in that tree”. It ended up be a mama and 2 cubs.
Busch Gardens Williamsburg is holding their Food and Wine festival until June 12th, 2022 and we were finally able to get Blake’s brother Ty to join us for the festival and to spend some time together.
We got to the park around 3:00pm and being a Saturday, of course it was busy.
While Blake, his mom and brother got everything ready to go into the park, I went ahead to the kiosk and printed out our free food and wine festival tickets and a free ticket for Ty. Each of our passes get multiple free tickets throughout the year. (If anyone needs one, let me know).
We asked Ty if there was anything specific he wanted to do and he said he was just along for the ride and happy to be hanging out.
The first thing we did was take Taylor to see which character was in the Sesame Street Forest of Fun for a meet n greet. It was Grover (one of her favorites) and Uncle Ty happily obliged to have his picture taken with her.
Uncle Ty and Taylor visit Grover
Mainly being there for the food and wine festival, our first stop was Korea. Since the lines for the food were pretty long, I took Taylor on the Elephant Run. She is a big fan of anything fast.
Elephant Run
We also made a stop at the Australia booth to grab some lamb chops and a mixed drink.
The Teacups can hold up to 5 people and we decided to hop on together. It was quite the experience. Nothing but laughs the entire time and Taylor sucking her thumb because it was not fast enough.
Teacups
Teacups
Everyone has fails and this is our teacup fail. I came up with the “brilliant” idea to set my phone in the center of the table and record us and well…….that didn’t work out well. I thankfully caught my phone before it flew out of the cup.
We skipped the Japan, Italy and Jamaica booths and took Taylor for a ride on the Carousel. Taylor decided the pole needed a hug.
Carousel
We stopped by the Stein shop in Germany to get German beer. I had a couple of sips and then gave the rest of mine to Ty. I started a new workout program and wanted to have a few sips but didn’t want the extra calories.
We stopped at the Brazil Booth to get some beef. This is one of our favorite booth for food during the festival.
Now it is time for the Log Flume. Taylor loves this ride and she has been riding it since she was 14 months old. Last time we went rode it, we had so much fun so this time I went in one boat by myself and Blake, Ty, Teri and Taylor went in another boat. I was able to take pictures of them and film them. Way too much fun was had in their boat.
The Le Scoot (Log Flume) does pictures coming down the big hill. So thankful for these!!
Le Scoot (Log Flume) Drop
After having way too much fun, we stopped in France and got Beignets.
Blake, Ty and Teri went on Griffin while Taylor and I waited to film them going down the hill. They are in the front row to the left.
Griffon
Griffon
I stopped by the Hawaii booth for a Blue Hawaiian. It is my favorite drink the park has.
We also stopped at the Greece booth and got a few different foods to try.
Blake, Ty and Teri went on Finnegan’s Flyer and I took Taylor to Sesame Street Forest of Fun to ride some of the rides. We went on Elmo’s Spire and Oscar’s Wiggly Worm. She has so much fun on them.
Sesame Street Forest of Fun
We attempted to take Ty on Pantheon since we got there but it was never open so we decided to try one more time before heading home and it was closed due to fireworks this time. Very unfortunate and disappointing.
Blake and I took Ty on Tempesto which is my favorite rollercoaster in the park.
Once done with Tempesto we head towards the parking lot and were able to catch the fireworks while we were standing near the car. Busch put on a decent fireworks show (not Dollywood quality but quality).
Fireworks
We had such a great time at Busch and very happy that Ty could join us. Hopefully he will join us again soon.
****If you go to Busch, get the Photo Key!!!! I highly recommend it!****
In April 2021, Blake and I set off to find the remnants of a plane crash from the 1960s. We found an article from the 1990s that gave approximate coordinates some landmarks to look out for. The article also stated the plane could be really hard to find and it is best to go with someone who has been before. We went ahead and gave it a go and we found the plane. When we went, it was fairly easy to see the plan due to no undergrowth. We wanted to take the kids to see it as we felt they would really enjoy exploring and learning the history of the crash.
History
Around sunset on May 1, 1964, Colonel Robert L. Bryson crashed in his military T-28 on the side of Humpback Rocks located off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Colonel Bryson’s flight companion that day was Colonel Joe Warren and the two were headed to Tennessee when the plane crashed in the mountains. Dusk was coming in and that is when the plane lost oil pressure 7000-8000 over a cloud deck above the mountains. Knowing they needed to bail, the plane (a trainer for the military) was not equipped with ejection seats. The two stood up in their seats and rolled out, hoping not to get hit by the tail. Colonel Warren landed near Rockfish Valley and Colonel Bryson landed near Greenfield. Col. Bryson walked to a nearby house and later met back up with Col. Warren in Lovingston. Neither Colonel Bryson or Colonel Warren ever made it back to the crash site. A year later, Colonel Warren disappeared during a crabbing expedition out of SC a day before his daughter was to marry. Colonel Warren and his future son-in-law got caught in a swell and disappeared.
Hike
Location: Blue Ridge Parkway – Humpback Rocks Picnic Area – Lyndhurst, VA
Distance: 3.66 miles
Trail Type: Out and Back
Elevation Gain: 774 feet
Terrain: Dirt, Rocks, Rooty, Brush
Trail: 0.3 mile spur trail leading to the AT (Appalachian Trail). Turn left onto the AT and continue to the coordinates of the plane crash
We began our hike towards the back of Humpback Rocks Picnic area. There is a rock at the beginning of the trail indicating that is the correct trail to the AT. Approximately 0.3 miles in length.
Once we connected to the AT, we turned left and continued our way to Battery Cliffs. Battery Cliff’s is a crop out along the trail that overlooks Wintergreen Resort.
Before reaching Battery Cliff’s we encountered our first snake of the day.
Wintergreen Resort from Battery Cliffs
The boys are such the explorers and they found a small cave and hid in it to attempt to Scare Blake and I.
We found a camping area that we made note of for the future.
Camping area
About 1/2 mile from Battery Cliffs is the location of the plane crash. The plane crash is located a couple hundred yards from the trail and from the trail, hikers are not able to see the plane especially during the spring and summer.
Thankfully since Blake and I found the crash site before we had the map to follow on our AllTrails App.
The kids were hiking ahead of us an they stopped to wait just past our turn. We hiked down to the crash site and the kids were in awe. This time it was hard to see them plane until we were super close to it. We explored the crash site for about 30 minutes and tried to answer as many of the kids questions that we could.
T-28 plane crash
It was a bit of a hike out from the crash site but well worth it. (I say this as I had to stop a few times coming up the mountain).
We make a stop back at the cliffs before heading back to the parking lot and got some pictures of the kids.
Battery Cliffs
Taylor fell asleep….
Sleepy Girl
During our hike we passed a total of 10 through hikers. These hikers are attempting the entire AT. It is always fun to chat with them and they typically stop us and chat for a short break. We talked to a group of 3 and I snapped a picture of Taylor and her awesome hiking hair.
We found a really cool tree while hiking out.
Again the kids had hiked ahead and waited for us at the turn to get back to the parking lot.
Once we finished the hike, we had lunch at the picnic tables and then Blake and I came up with some options of things to do.
We decided on Sugar Hallow Reservoir.
Blake and I have done a hike from the parking lot of Sugar Hallow Reservoir before and we were told there was a large swimming hole nearby with a rope swing and we have talked about bringing the kids there. We decided since we had time, we could scope out the area. Come to find out this swimming hole is a 1.5 mile hike from the parking lot. We did not have time today to do the hike and let the kids play in the creek instead.
We did see some pretty cool toad eggs in the creek.
Toad Eggs
We saw another snake as soon as we left the parking lot.
Snake
We had a great trip to the mountains, hiking to the plane crash and playing in the creek!
We had a BUSY Easter this year that span out many days.
My friend Brittany and I attempted to take her kids and Taylor to an Easter Egg Hunt put on by a local police department. There were so many kids when we got there and it was very unorganized. The hunt was to begin promptly at 5:30pm and right on the dot all the kids flooded into the playground area through a small opening (kids aged walking through 16). Little kids were getting trampled and it was nothing but unorganized chaos. We took the kids and left before one of them got hurt.
Brittany and I went to Target and got candy and plastic eggs and had a small hunt at her house for the kids.
Impromptu egg hunt
Easter Sunday
Blake had to work Easter Sunday but that didn’t stop Taylor from seeing her daddy on a holiday. I drove her to her daddy’s fire station to have brunch with his shift. I premade a casserole and finished cooking it when I got to the station and made a side of bacon.
While the food was cooking, Blake and I gave Taylor her Easter Basket. (The entire content of the basket came from Busch Gardens and only cost $15. Busch was doing $10 Busch Bucks and we have 7 passes and we were able to get a ton of books for Taylor). Taylor of course was so excited about her basket and enjoyed time reading with her daddy at the station.
Brunch turned out fantastic and everyone loved it.
Brunch
After brunch we went outside to take our yearly picture of Taylor in her Easter basket.
1st Easter2nd EasterThird Easter
I don’t think she will be able to sit in the basket next Easter.
Taylor and I left the fire station and went straight to my parents house to pick them up to go to my Uncle and Aunt’s house for an Easter get together. All of our family from my mom’s side was there. To include my Aunt and cousins from Florida. It was so good to see everyone. We had a lot of fun and lots of delicious food.
Taylor and her cousin Cameron
I got my other kids from their shortly before 6 and we went straight to Busch Gardens to try to see Cookie Monster and Elmo dressed up as the Easter Bunny. We were able to see Cookie Bunny! The kids were so excited.
Cookie Bunny
We stayed at Busch Gardens until the park closed and went home. As soon as we got home, the kids got their Easter Baskets.
Check out my post on Busch Garden’s – Easter Sunday
I took the kids to my parents house and they received Easter baskets there as well. (So did I!!!) The kids were super excited for this. My mom tailored each basket for each kid. Super sweet and thoughtful. Thanks Mom!!
April 24th, 2022
Every year Blake and I put together an egg hunt for the kids and they all look forward to it. I stuffed the eggs and I also made coupons for each kid to put in their big egg for little experiences. Examples: in app purchase, new book, big hug, make parents do your chores for the day, help make dinner for a week (the kids fight over who gets to help with dinner), pick the weekend adventure, etc. They loved this idea. We always count and recount the eggs to ensure the kids get all of them. Every year we always lose some and they are found throughout the year. Well this year was the same. We lost 3 eggs…..
While we were all searching for the lost eggs Ethan and Nick found a 4 foot black snake. Everyone in our family like snakes so all of the kids and adults ran over.
4 foot black snake
That night once my kids went back to their dad’s house, Blake, Taylor, Nick and I went back to Blake’s parent for dinner and for Nick and Taylor to get their Easter Baskets from his parents. The Easter Bunny at his parent’s house do a scavenger hunt to find the baskets. Super cute!
Easter Basket from Bama
We had a fun filled Easter with lots of fun activities!
Taylor has never had pictures with an Easter Bunny. We were not able to find one last year and she was born a week before Easter of 2020 which was also towards the beginning of COVID and there were no Easter Bunnies available. When I heard Busch Gardens was going to have an Easter Cookie and Easter Elmo, I thought this was perfect since Taylor is obsessed with Sesame Street.
I got the kids back from their dad shortly before 6 and we went straight to Busch Gardens. I told them we were going to try to see Cookie Bunny or Elmo Bunny.
As soon as we got to Busch, we went straight to Sesame Street Forest of Fun. We got in line for the character meet and greet and it was Oscar. This is only the 2nd time we have seen Oscar and he is set up really cute.
Oscar
Disappointing but oh well, we enjoyed seeing Oscar. As we were walking away, the employee told us that in 15 minutes, Cookie Bunny would be showing up. The kids rode a couple of rides until it was time to see Cookie Bunny!
Taylor wasn’t tall enough for Grover’s Roller Coaster but liked taking a picture while waiting on her siblings.Grover’s Alpine ExpressThankful for siblings, now I don’t have to get into the dragon boat!!
COOKIE BUNNY!!!
Taylor was overly excited!!She didn’t understand my instructions to stand closer
The kids went on the rest of the rides in Sesame Street Forest of Fun.
Prince Elmo’s SpireOscars Wiggly Worms
I took Taylor on the Lil’ Balloons and Little Gliders and the other kids went on the Battering Ram.
Lil’ Balloons
I only expected to go to Busch Gardens to see Cookie Bunny but the kids were having such a great time we stayed until the park closed.
We kids got in line for Finnegan’s Flyer and were about to get on and the ride shut down. This would have been Austin’s first time riding it. The ride closed because 2 people got stuck on it.
We left and went to Loch Ness Monster. I tried to get Austin to ride but he was scared and crying and the ride attendants told him to get off.
Once Ethan and Izzy got off, we went back to Finnegan’s Flyer to see if it was open and it was.
Austin reluctantly got back in line and Ethan got him to sit in the best seat on the ride in our opinion. (Orange side facing the line all the way to the left). Gives views of the pond and makes your stomach drop more.
Finnegan’s Flyer
Austin’s first time on Finnegan’s Flyer
We had about 10 minutes before the park closed and went back to Loch Ness to see if Austin would try this time. He did and just like Finnegan’s Flyer he said Loch Ness was EPIC!!!! I am glad he got over his fear of rides.
The American Dream Mall is the second largest mall in America. Located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, next to Met Life stadium.
We planned to go to the Mall for our Spring Break vacation because in the mall is Nickelodeon Universe (Theme Park) and DreamWorks Waterpark. Both were open during the week of our spring break. Our spring break was a week earlier than other states and districts spring breaks.
American Dream Mall has a lot of indoor attraction options.
Not knowing anything about the mall, we decided to go on Wednesday evening after checking into our hotel to get our bearings.
The mall has an underground parking garage with 4 sections: A, B, C and D. B and C are the parking lots for the parks. We drove around the outside of the mall until we reached the B and C lots. We passed Met Life Stadium while driving around. We ended up parking very close to the entrance. The mall wasn’t busy at all.
From the outside of the mall you could see the location of Nickelodeon Universe.
Outside of Nickelodeon Universe
The first thing we did once inside the mall was to check out the spring set up for the Easter Bunny. The Easter Bunny was taking a break at the time and we decided since we have 2 more days at the mall, we would see him the next day. The set up is gorgeous. Plenty of seating and places to take spring pictures.
We started seeing people riding around on plush zoo animals. You could rent a ride on zoo animal for $10 for 10 minutes and ride around the mall.
Ride on animals
Ethan saw a Coca-Cola area and sat on the bench. As he said “he just had to”.
Coca-Cola Lounge
Apparently we took the longer way around to get to the parks. We passed the Angry Bird Mini Golf. The golf course is set up really neat and it looked like a lot of fun.
Angry Bird Mini Golf
We made the mistake of taking the kids in the Lego store. They of course wanted every Lego they saw. They wanted to do the Lego Discovery Center. We told them that they were closed today but we would take the brochure with us and do some research on it. We ended up not doing it. It seemed like a lot of money for not much of an experience. Also the reviews were not that great.
Outside the Lego Store, is a play area and a kiosk called Me in 3D. We stopped by because they had superheroes. Ethan really wanted to check it out. I ended up getting him a Captain America figure. Nick got a Lego figure. The employee takes 360 degree pictures and then the figure gets mailed to you in 2 weeks. I will update this entry when we receive the products.
We finally made it to the parks. We were able to see Nickelodeon Universe and only the entrance to the DreamWorks Water Park.
We went down stairs to the water park to see if there was anyway we could see it before we went and were told no. Once we went, we understood why. When you enter you go straight to a locker room and then shower area and then into the water park. No easy way to just take a peek at the park.
The kids wanted to take a picture in front of the Nickelodeon Universe son.
Next to the parks is a 3-Story candy store called It’s Sugar. The store was crazy big and had so much candy. On the 3rd floor is an Oreo Cafe.
Almost everything was made out of candy. To include the entrance. Also inside is the worlds largest candy necklace. It even has the Guinness World Records certificate. World Record candy necklace
Next to It’s Sugar is a 2 story Toys R Us.
Toys R Us
Most of the kids have never seen an actual toy store since the majority of Toys R Us stores closed years before. Needless to say they were a bit overwhelmed. We actually left without buying anything. As soon as we walked in there was a magician at the counter and he immediately started showing the kids magic tricks.
Magic!
Taylor is absolutely obsessed with Boogie Boards. She has 4 of them. Well Toys R Us did not disappoint her when she saw their Boogie Board that is bigger than her.
Boogie Board
We head to the second floor which is filled with LEGOs, hot wheels, play-mobile, Nerf , etc. Even a Play-mobile interactive Fire Truck.
We headed up to the second floor to check out Big Snow. Unfortunately it was closed. Disappointing since I was going to surprise the kids with letting them ski and snowboard. It looked awesome, none the less.
Big Snow
It was getting late and we needed something to eat. We opted for one of the restaurants and chose based on the food options and prices.
We went with 1st RND a Burgers, Beer and Sports Bar/Restaurant. 1st RND features over 30 beers on tap and over 17 burger creations. Not the cheapest but the food and beer are very tasty and we were very happy with our choice of restaurant. Our server and the service we received was top notch. We were checked on frequent enough to make sure we had everything we needed but it was not over the top to where we would be annoyed. Since it was Taylor’s birthday weekend, the staff even sang to her and brought her out a scoop of ice cream.
The next day we walked around the mall a little bit until Nickelodeon Universe opened at 11.
We found a pretty cool sculpture outside of Yard House.
In the area near the Lego store, different backdrops were set up for picture taking. Of course the kids wanted to have their picture taken.
Slime Streak
Outside of Nickelodeon Universe are these little play areas with sheep. The kids enjoyed playing on them while waiting for the park to open.
We went by the Ice Rink. We didn’t have time to skate and that was okay.
The RinkLucciano’s
The last night of our time at the mall, we decided we wanted to try to see as much of the mall we could. Keeping in mind that there are many empty stores because the mall is only 3 years old. We made our way to “The Avenue”. The Avenue part of the mall is the luxury part of the mall with stores to include Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., Carpaccio, Gentle Monster, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc. Even the bathrooms seemed more upscale. The kids were fascinated with the area and the murals on the walls and especially of the sculptures/vases.
The Avenue
We did experience a lockdown situation while inside Nickelodeon Universe on Thursday April 7th. The lockdown situation was due to a shooting that occurred in the mall and at the time it was unknown if this was an active shooter situation or an isolated incident. The mall staff handled the situation diligently and professionally.
We left at 9:17 am on Wednesday, April 6th to head to NJ. The kids had breakfast at the house prior to leaving. Blake and I stopped at Bojangles, our order was wrong and we got 2 free sandwiches out of it and the boys happily ate them.
It was a bit of a drive but the kids did great. Our next stop was at a rest station in Maryland. We all got a drink. Nick found his doppelganger. I tried to get a picture but it didn’t turn out well.
Shortly before we got to our hotel, we got stuck in traffic. Welcome to NJ/NYC traffic. It didn’t help that it was storming.
Traffic
We made it to our hotel a little after 3:30. We stayed at the Comfort Suites Newark – Harrison. The reviews online were a little mixed but overall they seemed pretty good. The pictures looked really nice and it also offered a Free Hot Breakfast and with a family of 8, this is extremely important. It saves a lot of money. We were hopeful and if all else failed, we could find another place to stay. Once we arrived we were very surprised by the area in which the hotel is located. It did not appear to be the nicest area of town but throughout our 3 day stay, we didn’t run into any issues. The rooms were very clean, beds could have been a little more comfortable but overall decent. We thankfully didn’t have road side but we did have work yard side with river views. The breakfast did not end up being a buffet style hot breakfast that advertised. It was a freezer with frozen breakfast sandwiches to microwave. We ended up eating breakfast elsewhere for the next 3 days.
Once we got our belongings unpacked, we headed to the American Dream Mall where we will be spending the next 2 days. We wanted to figure out the area and how to navigate the mall as this is the 2nd largest mall in America. As we get closer to the mall we are able to see the skyline of New York City. This was exciting for my kids and I because none of us have ever been to NYC.
NYC
We passed MetLife Stadium which is located next to the mall.
MetLife Stadium
We finally made it to the mall. We read reviews about this being an ugly mall from the outside and the reviews didn’t disappoint. The outside of the mall is very blah.
Outside of Nickelodeon Universe
We got inside the mall and it was huge. We went around and looked at different things and checked out a few stores.
It’s sugar is a 3 story candy store and the kids went a little crazy but we didn’t end up getting anything. Most of the kids are not old enough to remember actual toy stores and they were in heaven when they saw the Toys R Us. We could see most of Nickelodeon Universe from the entrance. We tried to see DreamWorks Water Park but unfortunately we couldn’t get inside to see it. We were able to see small pieces of it from the windows.
We needed to find a place to eat and decided to try a restaurant called 1ST RND. 1ST RND is a sports theme restaurant with lots of beer on taps and burgers to choose from. We had an excellent experience, our server was attentive and patient. Especially with our family of 8 and a toddler that doesn’t like to sit still. The manager was great with local recommendations for around the area. Decent pricing and great food.
The next morning we had time before Nickelodeon Universe opened so we went to check out Paterson Great Falls National Historic Park. Prior to our trip, I never looked into waterfalls in the NJ area. I was sitting at work a couple of days before the trip with The Weather Channel on and Paterson Falls came up and I looked into it and it just so happened to be about 10 minutes from our hotel.
We stopped by a Burger King near the falls for breakfast due to the lack of a breakfast at the hotel.
The falls are located roadside and there is a short hike to the falls. Unfortunately the bridge across the falls was closed and to access the opposite side of the falls guest need to park along Maple Street and enter through Mary Ellen Kramer Park.
Alexander Hamilton StatuePaterson Great Falls
Unfortunately for us, the day we went to the falls the weather was poor, it was overcast and rained at times. It did not take away from the beauty and power of the falls.
Mary Ellen Kramer Park
Before leaving the falls, Ethan and Isabella spotted a person with a drone and it looked as if he was filming a video for Social Media and they were very excited. As we were walking by I told the kids to ask him if that is what he was doing and they were too embarrassed to ask so I asked for them. He was in fact filming a video for Instagram. It was then that this amazing and kind stranger allowed each of the kids to fly his drone and this was an exciting time for the kids. Well it got even better……..he then filmed a video for us with his drone to use on our own social media and YouTube channel. This was amazing and extremely kind of him!
We get to the mall shortly before the park opened and we went in a few stores and looked around. Shortly after the park opened we began our day of play in Nickelodeon Universe! The kids had an absolute blast and we rode almost every open ride at the park.
Shortly before 6:00 pm on April 7th, 2022 we had a life changing event happen during our time at Nickelodeon Universe. As Blake and I were getting off of The Shredder and Ethan and Nick were getting on, we were told the ride had been shut down and no reason was given. The employees were just as confused as we were. It also appeared other rides were shutting down as well. We though well maybe they decided to close the park an hour early. Disappointing but it has happened to us before at our local Busch Gardens. Unfortunately that was not the case. The reason ended up being a 3+ hour lockdown situation due to a shooting in the mall and at the time, it was unknown if it was an isolated incident or an active shooter. The majority of the information we received came from Twitter and local news outlets. A ton of police presence and a lot of scared adults and kids. Our kids shed tears but in the end did very well with the situation. We explained to them the importance of practicing the active shooter drills in school because sadly these types of situations are real and can happen anywhere. We did a lot of explaining to the kids what was going on and reassuring them that they were safe.
We got to our car a little after 9 and it took us a little bit longer to get out of the parking lot due to all of the police vehicles and ambulances.
We were all starving and needed to find a place for dinner. On our way to the mall, we passed a restaurant called Tick Tock Diner and the sign said open 24 hours. The kids really wanted to eat there because of the name. Even though it wasn’t spelled TikTok it was close enough for them. I walked into the restaurant and was told their kitchen would be closing in 10 minutes. I went to walk out and asked if everything was okay because of the look on my face. I told them about the incident we just experienced at the mall. They welcomed us with open arms and said they would cook anything on the menu we wanted and I they bent over backwards for us. We told the staff the whole story about the mall shooting and talked to our server a lot of the time. We had a fantastic dinning experience and the food was exceptional! All of the kids meals came with ice cream and Blake and I got a piece of Cannoli Cake which was the best we have ever had. Such a wonderful experience.
After a long day, we made it back to the hotel.
For breakfast the next morning, we went back to Tick Tock Diner. We loved the food the night before and the service was top notch. It was only a given we go back for breakfast. Another wonderful experience, great service, delicious food that came to us quick and some of the employees remembered us from the night before. We were told how well behaved our kids were. If you are in the East Rutherford part of NJ, you have to check it out!
The DreamWorks Water Park opened at 11 and we got there shortly after they opened. We expected to stay about a half a day and talked about going back to Nickelodeon Universe for the rest of the day. Well that did not happen. We spent the entire day at the water park and left as they were closing. I have never been to a water park like this one before. This is by far the best one I have been to. We live super close to Water Country USA and it has nothing on the DreamWorks water park. It was nice that everything was close together. Lots and lots of stairs but that was to be expected, a huge wave pool, water coaster that goes around the entire park, kids play area and the worlds tallest trapdoor drop slide (14 stories tall) that gives exceptional views NYC. I may have died when I got to the top of the slide but it quickly revieved me.
After we closed the park down, we decided to check out the rest of the mall but before we did, we stopped at the Nickelodeon gift shop outside of the parks to get a souvenir for the kids.
We walked the rest of the mall. Many stores were vacant and coming soon. We checked out a few of them and went to The Avenue the luxury upscale part of the mall.
We needed a place to stop for dinner and we found an Irish restaurant out of the mall called Blarney Station Pub. Delicious food and entertainment. I got a rum bucket to drink not really knowing what it was. It was quite tasty.
Rum Bucket
Tay took a quick nap during dinner as well and made herself a nice bed.
We got back to our hotel for our last night at the Comfort Suites.
The next morning we get up and head to Diggerland USA for the day. We stop by a rest area with restaurants to grab some breakfast. This was around 9:30. We get in line for Chick-fil-a and upon arrival, we were told they were only serving lunch. Next to Chick-fil-a was a Burger King and we were able to get breakfast there before they stopped serving it.
We made it to Diggerland as they were opening. This was also the opening day for the park for the year. We had a ton of fun during our time at the park. Plus it wasn’t crowded at all and we could ride anything and everything we wanted and as many times as we wanted. This is a park we have been wanting to take the kids to for a long time and finally got to check it off.
Once we leave Diggerland we head to our 2nd and last hotel for our trip, Holiday Inn Express Wilmington North – Brandywine. This hotel was fantastic. A lot of room, very clean hotel and clean rooms. Nice and welcoming staff and in a very safe area. Also their advertised free hot breakfast as actually a hot breakfast buffet. This is a huge bonus for us. I chose this hotel due to it being 1. closer to home and 2. because it was minutes from the Delaware State High Point.
Welcome to Delaware
Another state checked off the list for Ethan, Arianna, Isabella and Arianna! They were excited to get another state checked off.
During our drive, I researched restaurants along our route to find one that all the kids would like. I found a couple that sounded good and we settled on Stanley’s Restaurant. The online menu sounded delicious and if I haven’t posted it before, Blake calls his mustache Stanley. This was clearly the obvious choice.
Once we arrived, the parking lot was very crowded but we were willing to wait. I walk into the restaurant to see about getting on the waiting list and told the host that I had a party of 8. She asked if I made reservations and I told her no. They had a table for us anyways for a reservation that cancelled. It was perfect for our party. We had an excellent server, he was very attentive and did fantastic with our 6 kids and did a great job entertaining us. He asked a lot of questions and it was a lot of fun telling him about our trip and where we were from. Come to find out he had actually been to Williamsburg before. I told him how we found out about the restaurant and he loved it.
Blake’s Stanley and Stanley
The next morning before leaving the hotel, we had a delicious breakfast buffet. We all enjoyed it!
Hotel Breakfast
Our first stop on our way home was of course the Delaware State High Point.
This is one of the high points I was very excited about getting and Blake loves to tease me over it. This is because the high point is roadside with no hiking involved. Ebright Azimuth – Delaware’s highest point sits 447.85 feet above sea level. We parked in the neighborhood across the street and walked over to the sign. We were unable to find the benchmark for the highpoint.
Delaware High Point Sign
As we were getting back in the car I realized that I forgot to record the “hike” on my AllTrails App and ran back to the sign to complete the hike. During my “hike” I was able to spot a welcome to Delaware sign and I found the mud covered benchmark. Blake brought all the kids back over for pictures. I used my hand to wipe off the benchmark vs going back to the car to get wipes.
Delaware High Point BenchmarkWelcome to Delaware sign
Once we left the highpoint we go to Brandywine Creek State Park NatureCenter which is part of First State National Park to get a Cancellation Sticker. The park seemed great and we would love to go back there sometime to do some hiking. It was pretty busy as well.
Not far from the park sits the Old Swedes Historic Site/Old Swedes Church. This is another location to get a First State National Park Cancellation stamp. We tried to enter the church but unfortunately it was closed. I did reach out to their park services to request a stamp and they are going to send one to me. This is much appreciated, as I love collecting the stamps.
Old Swedes Church
Once we leave the church, we head home. We opted to go home the longer route along the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. This is more a more scenic route vs getting stuck in traffic taking 95.
We made a stop at Bojangles for lunch and then headed straight to my parents house to celebrate my moms birthday with my sister and her family.
For years we have wanted to take the kids to Diggerland USA located in West Berlin, NJ. We read many great reviews and researched the park a lot and felt while going up to NJ for spring break that we should make a stop by Diggerland before heading home.
It just so happens that Saturday April 9th, Diggerland opened for the season and we were able to go on opening day.
As soon as we arrived we were surprised at how the park looked. Not really sure exactly what we were expecting, however, initially it was not what we expected.
The first ride we went on was Battle Trucks. Battle truck takes you around a dirt course in a 5-ton military transport vehicle. This ride had a min. height of 30″, Taylor was able to ride and we were hopeful that she would be able to ride more rides (that was not the case).
Next up – Elevation Station, 8-ton diamond plate deck with 2 main hydraulic cylinders powered by a 48- horse power diesel engine and raises guest 60 feet in the air. Opinion: pretty boring but neat the see the park from 60 feet up and cool to be on one.
Elevation Station
The kids and Blake all took turns on the Backhoe Adventure while I watched Taylor. Only 1 Backhoe was in operation today and it made the rides go very slowly. Only 3 guest and 1 operator ride at a time and each person can switch out and drive if they want. The kids enjoyed driving and controlling the Backhoe and that made it all worth it.
Backhoe Adventure
Not knowing how busy the park gets or how busy the park would get on opening day Blake and the kids went on theRopes Course while I took Taylor to the playground. Diggerland’s Ropes Course is 4 stories tall, one of the largest in the world. The kids had a blast with all of the obstacles along the course.
Diggerland Ropes Course
Crawl Space aka the Playground, not just for Taylor but for all the kids was a lot of fun!
Diggerland – Crawl Space
Next up, the 32 foot Rock Wall. Blake and Austin made it to the top, for the rest of us, well we all tried…..tried our best. The nice thing about the ropes course and rock was is they are both included with the price of admission.
Diggerland – Rock Wall
Next to the Rock Wall sits 3 “thrill rides”
Spin Dizzy
The Spin Dizzy was by far our favorite ride at Diggerland. Guest spin in a 12-ton, high torque JCB JS 220. It really gets your stomach dropping.
Diggerland – Spin Dizzy
Dig-A-Round
Described as half excavator and half merry-go-round, guest sit in the bucket of a JCB 8065 and go around forwards and backwards in a 14,515 excavator. On one of Austin’s rides, the harness wasn’t secure but the ride operator quickly fixed it for him. Not without some tears being shed by Austin.
Sky Shuttle
Guest sit on a JCB 540-170 Telehandler and go straight up for 50 feet. The ride offers views of the entire park. The Sky Shuttle is a 26,587 lb machine with a turbocharged engine.
Diggerland – Sky Shuttle
For the rest of the attractions, Blake and I took turns riding them with the kids. The kids had so much fun being able to operate all of the heavy duty equipment (it was fun for us too).
Dumper Trucks
Blake and I had to take turns riding with most of the kids due to the height requirements for the operator being a minimum of 56″. For Dumper Trucks, guest drive around in a 1,310 pound Terex TA1EH with 22hp.
Digger Land – Dumper Trucks
Digger Land – Dumper Trucks
Skid Steers
JCB Skid Steer Loader 135 with 47.9hp, minimum operator height of 48″ making these perfect for the kids to drive alone. Isabella was a little hesitant to drive by herself but in the end she decided to. Austin wanted to ride with Blake. While the kids took turns, I went to get drinks and snacks for everyone. The snacks weren’t enough and once everyone finished riding, we got more snacks.
Diggerland – Skid – Steers
After snacks and drinks it was back to riding rides.
Greased Beast
Guest board seats in the rear hopper section of a steel demolition trailer. Guest are then lifted up about 35 feet in the air followed by a dumping simulation.
Diggerland – Greased Beast

Big Diggers
Guest operate and dig with a JCB 8030/8029 weighing 7,092 lbs.
Diggerland – Big Diggers

Mini Dig: Bowlers/Ducks
Guest operate JCB 8018 mini-excavators to bowl and pick up ducks.
Diggerland – Mini Dig: Ducks
Rugged Riders:
Guest ride Kubota RTV-900s weighing 2,000 lbs with 21.6hp around a track.
Diggerland – Rugged Riders
Farm Tractors
Guest drive Kubota B2601 Tractors around a track. Minimum height to drive the tractors is 48″. This however proved difficult because both Austin and Arianna had trouble driving them because of their height.
Before making our way to the opposite side of the park, Blake and the kids get on the Ground Shuttle. Taylor wanted to ride and of course was too small.
Ground Shuttle

Diggerland – Ground Shuttle
Once on the other side of the park, we were the only guest there and had the area to ourselves.
Barrel Train
Taylor could actual ride the Barrel Train and she was so happy! The Barrel Train is pulled by a Ventrac 4500.
Diggerland – Diggerland
Ventrac 3400’s
Turnpike Tractors
Ethan didn’t need an adult to ride with him because of his height but I wanted to ride with him so I jumped in the back of his. I also drove Arianna, Isabella and Austin around on one.
Shake N’ Roll V2
Dynapac CC950 double drum vibratory rollers. All the kids were able to drive and they did a great job as these were not the easiest to operate.
Diggerland – Shake N’ Roll V2
We went back to the Spin Dizzy and rode it a couple times, played on the playground and Austin did the rock wall until it was just about to go home.
The exit to the park is through the gift shop, so needless to say the kids wanted to get something.
Diggerland PanoWorld’s Fastest Backhoe
And once again, we closed the park down.
All and all, Diggerland USA was a fun park to visit and we can cross it off our list. I wish Younger kids could ride more things with their parents but that wasn’t a deal breaker for us. The kids had a fantastic time and that is what matters!
The parked opened at 11 and we began our adventure. To get to the park you take either an escalator or an elevator down to the bottom floor and immediately met with the slime play area.
We decided to do all of the kiddie rides first to get them out of the way. Plus we thought it would only take us about 2 hours to ride everything. The park wasn’t busy at all and the longest we had to wait for any ride was if the ride was already going and we had to wait until they got off.
The very first ride we went on was Rugrats Reptar Go-Round. A 2 story carousel type ride with Reptars as the traditional horses. Such a fun first ride.
Reptar Go-Round
Right outside the ride, there were Rugrats characters to take pictures with. The kids clearly have never seen the Rugrats because they asked me if I knew who the characters were. Haha silly kids!
Up next, Blaze’s Monster Truck Rally. Cute ride for kids with a great display.
Taylor’s best friend loves Blue’s Clues and we found the big red chair in front of the Blue’s Skidoo ride and we had to take her picture to show her friend.
While in front of Blue’s Skidoo we went ahead and got on the ride. The kids really enjoyed going on it and making Blue and Magenta go up and down.
It was funny to see how many characters the kids didn’t know and how many Blake and I didn’t know that they knew. That being said, the next ride was Ren & Stimpy’s Space Madness. I got excited about the characters and the kids looked at me like I was weird. This ride was tons of fun. It make your stomach drop and was much more of a thrill than expected.
Ren & Stimpy’s Space Madness
Next we went to the back of the park near the Shellraiser. Unfortunately for us, the Shellraiser was closed for maintenance. Very disappointed about this because it is one of their best rides but it was okay, so many other rides to ride. The kids still wanted to have their picture taken in front of it.
We did get on the ride next to the Shellraiser, Shimmer & Shine JumpingGenies. This is a ride very similar to Dollywood’s Frog and Fireflies. Isabella loved Shimmer and Shine and she loved being able to ride the ride.
Pup Pup & Away our first Paw Patrol ride of the day! Needless to say, Austin was ecstatic to ride. Austin is obsessed with Paw Patrol. For his last 3 birthdays, the theme was Paw Patrol and we have what I feel is every Paw Patrol toy ever created (not really, but it sure seems that way).
One happy pup…..I mean Austin
Pup Pup & Away is a Ferris Wheel ride where each basket is a hot air balloon.
We tried to get a group picture and as you can tell, it did not work out. Taylor wanted to pet and hug all of the pups instead of turning around and looking at the camera. These types of photos are the best.
Paw Patrol Ride #2…..Zuma’s Zoomers. This ride was much more fun than what we initially though. Nonstop laughing and even Taylor wanted to ride again.
Next up…Our first character meet of the Day, Donatello from TMNT.
Butterbean’s Sweet Spin is next up on our kiddie ride adventure. Blake, Ethan, Taylor and I rode together and Blake really got the cupcake spinning. Taylor had the best expressions on her face the entire time.
As soon as we got off the ride, Austin noticed Chase was at the meet and greet stage and we went right over. Austin was very excited to meet one of his favorite characters.
Chase
Chase Meet and Greet
We got in line for Dora’s Sky Railroad. The hot air balloon part of the ride was not in operation during our visit. We went to get on the railroad and were told that Taylor was too small to ride. This was very odd as it is a slow moving railroad with really high doors and seatbelts. The ride did give great views of the park.
View from Dora’s Sky Railway
Next to the train is the Fairly OddAirways, another kiddie ride that Taylor was not tall enough for. It however was another fun kiddie ride.
Thankfully the next kiddie ride Bikini Bottom Crosstown Express did not have a height requirement preventing Taylor from riding.
Squidward is there to meet you as you exit the ride, he is just waiting at the bus stop.
Apparently Taylor too got tired of waiting for the Bus.
Poor Squidward
Aang’s Air Gliders is the first thrill ride of the day. I have never seen a ride like this before and it was probably one of my favorite rides in the park, if not my favorite. This is also the first ride for Arianna and Austin that goes upside down. Arianna rode it with Isabella and I and Austin rode it with the boys. Checkout the YouTube video to see what it is all about.
Next up on the list of thrill rides is Kraang Prime Pandemonium! This ride spins while going back and forth and upside down.
We all got on Timmy’s Half Pipe Havoc. A giant skateboard ride goes back and forth, while spinning on a half pipe.
Timmy’s Half Pipe Havoc
We got on The Shredder, 1 of the 4 coasters but only 1 of the 2 that were currently open. The Shredder is the world’s tallest and longest free-spinning coaster. We eventually learned that if you sit on one side only, you spin almost the entire ride.
Not the best video but it shows what the coaster does
Nickelodeon Slime Streak is a twisting coaster that gives you the impression you are riding on slime.
Nickelodeon Slime Streak
We wanted to ride Sandy’s Blasting Bronco but it was closed for annual maintenance. According to Facebook groups for Nickelodeon Universe, it has been closed for quite sometime.
Sandy’s Blasting Bronco
Next to Sandy’s Blasting Bronco is the Legend’s of the Hidden Temple ropescourse. Unfortunately the ropes course was also shut down. Apparently it has been closed since COVID and never reopened. However Olmec and the steps of knowledge are there for pictures and this made me very happy. My inner 10 year old self came out.
Also on the ropes course is the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.
We went on one more ride before we left the park for a little bit to grab a snack. The ride, Jimmy Neutron’s Atom Smasher. This is a rider controlled ride that allows you to flip forward or backwards.
Jimmy Neutron’s Atom Smasher
The food at the mall was certainly not cheap but the food in the park was very overpriced. We grabbed pretzels and donuts instead of eating in the park. After about an hour, we went back to the park.
Blake and I took the elevator back down to the park and the kids took the escalator and got to the park before us and immediately played in the slime play area until we got there (1 minute later).
Slime Zone
It’s a Great Day for Adventure Bay
PAW Patrol Adventure Bay play area that is. The kids had so much fun playing on all of the cars, lookout tower and slides. The play area is huge. Austin took pictures with everything. He was so happy to play in Adventure Bay.
Adventure Bay
Taylor had a great time and but also enjoyed running around on the bench.
After Adventure Bay we went on SpongeBob’s Jellyfish Jam. This is a swing ride that in my opinion is the best swing ride I have been on.
SpongeBob’s Jellyfish Jam
While everyone else went on the swings, I saw Blue was on stage for the meet and greet and I took Taylor over to get her picture with him. She really enjoyed meeting him.
Once we were done with the meet and greet we all took turns riding any of the rides we wanted to go on again.
Of course I had to get a picture of my Helga, I mean my Arianna with Helga.
Helga and Arianna
As Blake and I were getting off The Shredder and the boys were getting on, we were told the ride was shut down. We all thought it was strange because it was a little over an hour before the park closed. Even the ride attendant didn’t know why he was being told to shut the ride down. What happened next became the 3 longest, chaotic and stressful hours we have ever felt.
After really long and late night due to being in a 3+ hour lockdown because of a shooting inside the mall, we finally left for the night.
